Virginians need to heal, pause and pray

USA TODAY US Edition
3 Jun 2019

The horrific and deadly mass shooting at a municipal building in Virginia Beach on Friday has left all of us in Hampton Roads reeling in pain and disbelief. Hours after the workplace shooting, Mayor Bobby Dyer said, “This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach.”

This shooting comes on the heels of a Memorial Day block party shooting in Chesapeake. Before that, a 13-year-old boy died from a fatal shooting that occurred on Mother’s Day in Norfolk.

At this time, our hearts go out to the families directly impacted by this latest tragic event. As a community, we need to pray and offer our loving support for everyone involved in the massacre. On so many levels, the impact of these recent events will be with us forever. We find solace in Bible passages, like Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Journey with Jesus Through Lent

A book by Glenn E. Porter Sr.

Buy on Amazon | Buy from Judson Press

Practical, prophetic, and inspiring, this unique resource will transform your congregation’s experience of the Lenten season by following in Jesus’ footsteps on the road to Jerusalem and the cross. The book consists of seven weeks of meditations, including Bible readings for Holy Week. Each week open with a spiritual theme for the week: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving, Bible Study, Service, and Gratitude.

Every day’s devotion begins with a Scripture reading from the Gospel of Luke and an African proverb or other saying, followed by a meditation and concluding with a biblical prayer focus. Distinctive among Lenten devotionals, this work includes meditations for Sundays, which feature group discussion questions for church school or Bible study use and an invitation to personal action in the week ahead. Also includes Scripture readings for Holy Week!
